Almost every stock market index has one or more Exchange Traded Funds that attempt to mimic exactly the composition of that index. Most of these are traded on the American Stock Exchange and they trade just like stocks. Two advantages of buying index funds (unlike regular mutual funds) is that they may be purchased or sold at any time of the day at a price approximating the index itself, and that they may be bought and sold as frequently as one likes.
